Gustav Deutsch
Born in Vienna in 1952, Gustav Deutsch studied Architecture, but fears being questioned about his occupation. Architect, artist or filmmaker are all correct answers, but none of them please him. He’d rather quote Robert Bresson and refer to himself as a “cinematographer” – a term that suitably describes Deutsch’s work. According to Austrian art critic Stefan Grissemann, in editing found footage Deutsch obsessively seeks to save and collect all the endless forms of expression and fascination of film, in addition to the prominent investigative and pedagogical feature of his work. This has often been attributed to Deutsch’s first works on video completed in the state of Lower Austria in 1981. Nevertheless, apart from working for his original occupation, Gustav Deutsch continues to participate in numerous projects ranging from exhibitions to joint works with her life partner Hanna Schimek. It is perhaps with the “Film ist” series, his best known work, that Deutsch is closer to achieving his goal of crafting a phenomenology of film.
